Personality & Traits

General Overview Somewhat withdrawn, though he has been known to cut loose at times whenever there are festivities afoot. Also possesses a very witty and cleaver sense of humor, however macabre it may sometimes be. He's also one big information sponge. Also has a tendency to talk quite a bit.

Due to the years he'd spent traveling the galaxy following the fall of his homeworld to the Borg about a century earlier, Zax carries more than his fair share of baggage; most of it regrets. But he also happens to be haunted by both his mistakes, as well as some of the more fearsome things he'd seen in his travels.

Because of his past, Zax has developed a habit of not trusting others, at least completely. He also has a habit of not telling the whole truth, or partial truths, though he almost never actually lies. As such, he tends to keep himself as something of a mystery to the people around him...weather this is intentional or not, only he knows.

Ever since he discovered not only that his granddaughter Xias was alive, but also had a son, he became obsessively protective of them. However, after he discovered that his granddaughter had been giving weapons of mass devastation to Romulan Separatists as a means of finding him in order to make him pay for the death of his wife - her grandmother, whom she blamed him for, he stopped trusting her. Especially after she tried to kill her own son in order to make him suffer.
Strengths & Weaknesses Zax is a very difficult man to anger, though when the situations breaks his patience, he could make the stars fall. Because of this, he always makes sure that he has a way out, so that if push really does come to shove, he'll always have a way to stop himself before he goes too far. Though sometimes, that doesn't always work.

Zax is both a recovering alcoholic and former drug addict, who has been known to get himself drunk off of synthehol. As such, he rarely drinks, or if he does, he makes a point of it to have someone around to remind him of when its time to stop. However, the times that he does get drunk, are seemingly the only times he will willingly and openly talk about himself. As such, some have tried to purposefully spike his drink to find out more.

He posses very cleaver mind, especially when it comes to plants, rocks and gasses, making him a fairly decent planetary xenobiologist. Though, he has been known to get caught up in his work from time to time.

Due to another set of old habits, Zax has an inherent distrust of authority figures. This extends all the way back to his life on his homeplanet before the Borg invasion. His distrust usually extends to those whom appear overly arrogant, uptight, and/or dismissing of facts and/or advice in favor of opinions.

Zax does suffer from a form of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and thus, tries to stay away from certain situations where he could be trapped in tight, enclosed spaces for extended periods. He also suffers from a mild form of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), where he has urges to match socks. He usually uses this as a way of de-stressing, after a PTSD attack, or from heavy stresses in general.

He fears tight, enclosed spaces, as well as the Borg. Though he deals with the latter through anger.

Ambitions Though he never talks about his long-term ambitions, he does have a goal that is near and dear to his heart, and that is to find a way of finding a way of reverting every Borg drone in the collective back to their original state.

...By ANY means necessary.
Hobbies & Interests Due to his Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, he has a compulsion to match socks where ever he finds them.

He also likes to have have a good time with massive parties. This has gotten him into trouble on several occasions with Starfleet, for...indecent actions unbecoming of a Starfleet Officer. Hence, why he usually prefers the holodeck.

Aside from that, he also has a love of board games. The human game of Igo happens to be his favorite, though Denobulan Chess could come in as a close second.

He also has an appreciation for the martial arts. Though he holds no belts of any kind, he is skilled in several form of self-defense.

Finally, he enjoys studying the histories of the various peoples he encounters, including extinct civilizations.

Personal History Supposedly born roughly 528 years ago, apparently on the El-aurian homeworld, Zendarix Ku'fanblriagd, or Zax as he prefers to be called, is something of a mystery to the people he surrounds himself with. Though weather this something which is intentional, or simply a coincidence is the real question. Though most people believe this to be a result of his El-Aurian nature.

While he almost never talks about his real past, from what others have been able to piece together, he was on or at least close by to the home world of the El-aurians when the Borg attacked. Weather he actually fought the collective or not is matter of opinion. Most of the counselors he's spoken to will usually find themselves debating amongst themselves as to whether or not El-Aurian's are capable of low-level telepathy, or if El-Aurian's experience PTDS differently from other species. But the one thing they will all agree on, is that the loss of his homeworld - and subsequently, his family - have left him with deeply-held scars which, they fear, will never heal.

After the loss of his home world, he apparently spent the next century or so wandering the galaxy aimlessly. He'd traveled at least half of the galaxy before stumbling upon a ship from the Alpha Quadrant which had come through the Bajoran Wormhole. Deciding that the rest of the galaxy could wait, he went through the wormhole, just before the outbreak of the Dominion war and the sealing of the wormhole via a minefield.

Faced with yet another conflict, he decided to join a crew of smugglers whom were operating along the Federation-Cardassian boarder; ferrying information across the boarder for the Federation and Starfleet Intelligence until the end of the conflict.

After the war's end, he remained aboard the smuggler ship for several more years ferrying relief supplies to ravaged Cardassian colonies (along with the odd hold of contraband) until he decided to travel to Earth. There, he ran into an old acquaintance of his whom was now a starfleet officer. With his help, he was able to enter Starfleet Academy.

He is everything that you would least expect from a man of science: loud, boisterous, and something of a party animal with a love of alcohol. This has gotten him into trouble on certain occasions with his commanding officer. Though, he has taken steps to limit his exposure to those situations. As such, he has since been attempting to give up alcohol, though it happens that he has a rare intolerance to synthehol. It works on him as similarly as alcohol would. This has been attributed to a unique enzyme in El Aurian saliva which, when combined with the chemicals present in synthehol, creates alcohol of varying potencies. This is also true for certain types of liquor, usually certain gins originating from felinoid species.

While the official age he gave upon his entrance into Starfleet some years ago was 430, the evidence that his true age may actually be greater than that began piling up almost immediately. He also has a knack for holding some things back, which has gotten him into trouble with his superiors on more than one occasion. Though, he never actually lies. Although, it should be noted that honors were also entered into his service record after each event along with a reprimand. Aside from that, there have been several attempts to capture him by bounty hunters. However, in the only time where his case was brought before an arbitrator, the judgement that the warrant was invalid due to not being issued by a legitimate government (ie. a group of terrorists) was passed.

Zax has also mentioned on several occasions to being a father and a grandfather, though he never elaborated on these claims. He is however, a widower, and also keeps a holo of him and his wife with him everywhere he goes. The rumors were confirmed however, when in 2391, the vessel he'd been serving on responded to distress call from an unarmed transport vessel which was under attack by Romulan Separatists, whom had been attacking various worlds - both Romulan and Federation. Upon rescuing the survivors, he discovered his granddaughter, alive and well, and now the mother of a son whom was half human.

It wasn't long however, until they discovered that their meeting was no accident. As a matter of fact, Xias had planned it for years. She had been giving the Romulan Separatists various types of weapons, including biogenic devices as a means of drawing him out. She had planned to capture him, and then torture him for the death of his wife, her grandmother, whom she blamed him for. Things changed when she tried to harm her own son as a means of making him suffer. He was able to break out and stop her from hurting him. But, before he could completely subdue her, she was shot and killed by her son.

He has been his the primary caregiver of his Great-grandson ever since.

CAREER HISTORY
While his time at the academy was short compared to his peers - graduating in only two and half years - his tenure there was utterly mundane. Upon his graduation, he was assigned to the USS App'lachia as the assistant science officer. That assignment only lasted for four months before his commanding officer had him be transferred upon the orders of a certain admiral.

Unlike his tenure aboard the App'lachia, the USS Oran was different. Where his previous assignment had been aboard a large heavy cruiser, the Oran was an aging Ambassador-class starship with a deep-space assignment. He spent the next three years there, first as the assistant science officer, then, when his superior was injured during a shuttle mission, which left her in a coma, Zax took over her position. He remained there until the Oran was destroyed during a incident with an alien craft which did not identify itself.

After the incident with the unknown aggressor, Zax was ordered to take time at Starfleet Medical to recuperate. It is believed that this is the incident which caused his PTSD. After being released, he accepted a post aboard the USS Inanna as Chief Science officer.

He worked on the Inanna, until its last mission, where, while answering a distress call from a non-Federation planet, was unable to retain a rouge officer whom attacked and destroyed the planet along with its inhabitants. While attempting to take the said said officer into custody, he allowed the renegade officer to escape, and later perish.

Considering this last mishap, Lieutenant Zax decided to transfer off of his ship. He returned to the academy in early 2389 to complete his starship piloting training. Upon his return to Earth, he was recruited to act as the acting Chief Science Officer aboard the vessel he was aboard, the USS Quirinus, when they discovered the remains of an ancient sleeper colony ship belonging to a long-extinct species called the F'rel'nacht adrift in deep space. Upon boarding the vessel, they discovered that while most of the pods had failed, some where still active, and held living members of the F'rel'nacht.

However, upon their attempt to revive what appeared to be highest-ranking individual, the said individual became agitated when he saw how many pods were dead. A scuffle ensued, and the captain of the Quirinus fired several shots into the equipment, destroying the stasispod life-support systems and killing everybody still in the pods. A scuffle ensued as the away team attempted to disarm their captain. The captain was killed by the F'rel'natch survivor.

Following his completion of the course, he made a complete department transfer, from science, to command and, upon completion of his retraining, was assigned to the USS Einstein as its Chief Navigational Officer that same year.

He spent the next two years aboard the Einstein, where his skills as historian came in handy when the crew discovered the ruins of an ancient civilization in stasis below a Federation colony. As their language matched that of an old and now extinct galactic empire, Zax was able to make contact with the species and safely revive all of their people.

In 2391, the Einstein responded to distress call from an unarmed transport vessel which was under attack by Romulan Separatists, whom had been attacking various worlds - both Romulan and Federation. Upon rescuing the survivors, he discovered his granddaughter, alive and well, and now the mother of a son whom was half human.

Things changed when she tried to harm her own son as a means of making him suffer. He was able to break out and stop her from hurting him. But, before he could completely subdue her, she was shot and killed by her son.

However, because the Einstein had been heavily damaged in a firefight with a Romulan Warbird while attempting to rescue Zax, the ship was ordered back to port where it was deemed damaged, but salvageable but no overhaul was ordered. Instead, the ship was mothballed and the crew reassigned.
