Mission: Episode 0 - Semper Fidelis
Location: Engineering, USS Bunker Hill
Timeline: MD 01

OOC: The following takes place before "A Swing and a Miss."

Oliver had just stepped out of the ready room after his first meeting with the captain when his comm badge came to life.

"Arlin to Lieutenant Lee."

"Yes, Chief, what can I do for you?"

"May I see you in engineering, right now?"

The chief engineer sounded rather agitated over the comm, and Oliver wondered what it could be. "On my way." He said.

[A few moments later]

Oliver stepped inside the nearly empty main engineering as the doors hissed open. He quickly found the chief engineer working at one of the stations to his right. Walking over, he said, "Chief, you do know that technically I don't start working till tomorrow, right?"

"Ah, there you are, lieutenant." Said the Bolian engineer as he looked up from his station. "I do apologize, but this can't wait for another day."

"I'm all hears, chief." Oliver reassured him with a smile.

Gesturing at their surroundings, Arlin asked, "Look around you, lieutenant, do you see anything missing?"

Oliver survey the room. "Hmm, I see the warp core is where it's supposed to be. All the bulkheads seem to be in place." Then smiling mischievously, he said, "Oh, wait, don't tell me, it's your birthday and they forgot to throw you a surprise party."

Arlin would have chuckled at that, but he was simply too agitated at the moment. "No, lieutenant. It's my staff. My staff are missing."

"Huh," The information caught Oliver by surprise. "but Lieutenant Voldosia told me all the engineering staff have reported in for duty."

"Oh, they are all on board alright." Said the engineer. "But most of them have been reassigned to security."

Oliver wasn't sure if he had heard right. "Security?"

"Yes, security. "

"But, why?"

The Bolian shrugged. "Beats me. The order came directly from the captain. And it's not just engineering, operations, science and flight control, they all had their staff reassigned. Now I don't even have enough people for the regular duty shifts. Where am I supposed to find people for all the damage control drills the captain wants?"

"Hmm," Oliver frowned at the decidedly irregular course of action by Commander Enright. "Did you talk to the captain?"

"No, not directly, but I did talk to Lieutenant Voldosia, per the chain of command."

"What did she say?"

"She said it was the captain's decision and there was nothing she could do about it. Then I heard we were going to have a new executive officer so I called as soon as I found out you came aboard. Figured I might have better luck with you."

Oliver examined his options for a brief moment and decided that he should first look into the situations in the other departments and find out how they were being affected by the personnel change before talking to Enright.

"Tell you what, chief, I'll look into it and see if I can convince the captain to change his mind. At the meantime, do the best you can with what you have. I'll get back to you as soon as I can.

"Thank you, lieutenant." Said the engineer. "I appreciate it."

With a smile Oliver replied, "Any time, chief. I'll keep you posted." At that, he turned and headed for the doors.
