Episode 04 Draft Outline

Postby Oliver » Mon Nov 07, 2016 5:48 am

Episode 04 is meant to be a follow-up to the previous mission Episode 03 - The Future That Was, but it is also self-contained in that you don't need to have read any of the posts from Episode 03. Any relevant background information will be provided in-character either through conversation or flashbacks.

But in case you are interested, you can check out the suggested reading order for Episode 03 on our website. Here is a very brief summary of that mission:

"In an alternate 2416 the Federation is steadily losing the Second Dominion War. Disaffection with the incompetent and corrupt government is wide spread. Highly respected Marine General Ardon Bolanus overthrows the government in a coup and promise to end political corruption and reverse military setbacks. Many sector commands fall in line, but Oliver, now admiral and commander of Kalandra Sector, refuses and sets out to suppress the coup and restore the proper constitutional order. He succeeds, but the civil war weakens the already weakened Starfleet. Within a year the Federation surrenders to the Dominions. Oliver is arrested on false charges and is assassinated as he awaits trial. Starfleet remnants continue their resistance, but hope for a restored Federation is effectively quashed when the Klingons join the fray to seize as much former Federation space as they can lay their hands on."

The following is the draft outline for our current mission Episode 04. It's very much a rough draft, so take a look and share your thoughts with us. I'm open to suggestions and changes to the mission outline. If you have suggestions for subplots for your characters, also let me know. You can either leave a comment here or PM me. :)

Prelude

-- 2418 (Alternate Future) The USS Themyscira is forced to flee from its secret asteroid base when the Klingons attack. The crew - which includes Lt. Terri Lee, Oliver and Korra's daughter in the alternate timeline - is forced to jump into the time stream even though the chrono generator has not been fully tested.

-- 2393 (Present/Current Timeline) Aboard the Arcadia the senior staff is briefed on their three-year exploratory mission beyond the Federation borders.

Act 1 - Lies

MD 01

-- The Arcadia arrives in the Huitzi System, Gullundrian Sector, to pick up Yopp, the High Priest of the 14th Order of the Shaper, as a passenger on its journey into deep space as well as to deliver supplies to the long neglected colony on Huitzi IV.

-- A damaged USS Themyscira drops out of time stream on the edge of the Silent Triangle, pursued by a Klingon warship. Captain Ishikawa sends out a distress signal. The Arcadia responds and disables the Klingon ship, which is promptly destroyed by the Themyscira.

-- The Themyscira crew is taken aboard for medical treatment as engineering and operation teams began repairs on the Themyscira. Oliver questions Ishikawa and learns about her version of the events of Episode 03, e.g. the war, the coup, and the Federation’s fall.

MD 02

-- The repair team discovers the Themyscira’s Virtual Intelligence, which has been manually disabled. The VI’s discovery raises question about Ishikawa’s story and her true mission. After further investigation, it is revealed that Ishikawa plans to steal the last remaining sample of the morphogenic virus from a secure facility, modifies it, and use it to decimate the Founders, both to prevent the fall of the Federation in the future and to extract vengeance for the billions of lives lost in the war.

Act 2 - Injustice

MD 02 (continued)

-- Oliver confronts Ishikawa with her genocidal plan and heated argument ensues over the justification for genocide or the lack thereof.

-- The entire crew of the Themyscira is put under guard and interrogated, but Ishikawa and most of her crew - except her executive officer Lt. Cmdr. Curtis Dale - manage to escape. Before the Themyscira jumps to warp, Ishikawa kidnaps Zax and Korra to use as a bargaining chip against Oliver.

-- The Arcadia is unable to pursue the Themyscira due to sabotage.

Act 3 - The Federation Way

MD 03

-- With repair done, the Arcadia is ready to bring Ishikawa to justice, but is unable to track the cloaked Themyscira’s course and location. Oliver interrogates the Dale, who refuses to cooperate. Enraged by the revelation that Ishikawa was the one that killed his father, takes it upon herself and extracts the necessary information from the saboteur in a way bordering on torture. Oliver is dismayed by Terri’s method, but is forced to use the information to track down the Themyscira.

-- Aboard the Themyscira Ishikawa reveals to Korra her history and the complicated relationship between the two of them and Oliver.

-- Meanwhile Ishikawa tries to persuade Zax to cooperate and help her modify the morphogenic virus. She reveals to him that in her timeline Zax has, in fact, already developed a virus that crippled the Founders although too late to save the Federation.

MD 04

-- The Arcadia finally catches up with the Theymyscira. After an intense battle the ship is disabled and boarded. Yopp sneaks aboard and attempts to destroy the ship in fulfillment of a prophecy. Ishikawa stays behind and goes down with the ship so that Zax and Korra could safely get back to the Arcadia.

It looks good overall I think. I will read it again and have some ideas for things we could add. Also... that Bunker Hill reference at the end :P

A couple of questions. Please don't take these as criticisms. Just need clarification.

1) Is the Klingon vessel from the future? If so, what is their motivation? Do any of them survive? Could be some opportunity ie. Klingon prisoners.

2) Why do they need our last copy of the morphogenic virus? Couldn't they create it in their time? Is there something else that would work besides the virus? What about a sample of Odo's "blood" that is secretly being held? Just brainstorming.

3) What is the extended part that Yopp is playing? Is he working with Ishikawa? Trying to change his people's future?

Thanks for listening.

Great questions! :)

1) Yes, the Klingon ship is from the same alternate future that the Themyscira is from. In that future after the Federation falls to the Dominions, the Klingons joined the Dominions along with a few other minor powers to divide up former Federation space. They were mopping up the resistance when they attacked the secret base, but they have no idea of what the Themyscira is planning.

In the original draft After the Arcadia disables the Klingon ship, the Themyscira immediately destroys it. But I think you have a great idea there. Having some Klingon captives on board could provide a different perspective on the events of that alternate future. Also, we could plant the seeds for some future mission. Say, after the current mission, the Klingons are handed over to Starfleet Intelligence, who decide that, instead of releasing them to the Empire, they should be imprisoned indefinitely so that their knowledge of the future and future tech would not fall into the Empire's hands. Later on they escape confinement and seek out revenge on the Arcadia. Or something like that. :)

2) They did develop a modified morphogenic virus - since a cure was found for the original one - and the plan was to travel back to a time right before the outbreak of the Second Dominion War and wipe out the Founders with the virus. The idea was to avoid causing too many changes to the timeline by traveling further back in time. The surprise attack, however, forced them to make the time jump without all the necessary preparation - the chrono generator, for one, is not completely tested and calibrated. That resulted in their traveling further back in time to the present (2393) than they had planned. That means their being here and now is as surprising to them as it is to us. That would help make it more emotional when Terri meets her father (Oliver), albeit one that is quite different from the one she knew growing up. As for Ishikawa, it would be an Oliver that she hasn't seen in decades. (It would also have similar impact on some of the characters from the Bunker Hill if they had not left due to personal reasons, which in part led to the soft reboot with the Arcadia).

I believe Section 31 developed the original virus from Odo's blood sample. The virus is just a means to an end; there could be other things that might work as well, and I'm open to suggestions.

3) Yopp is our chief helmsman's brainchild. The character is meant to provide and overarching villain for the next couple of missions. He would not be the main antagonist of all these missions, but his presence would be felt. His cult was first hinted at in Episode 2 and then again towards the end of Episode 3. Our current mission is where he makes his first in person appearance. He is not working with Ishikawa though his cult might have a sleeper agent on the Arcadia. There is also an ancient prophesy involved, but beyond that we haven't had a chance to develop more details about the character, his motivations or his plan. I'm very much open to suggestions and ideas.
